Markus Pierson wasn't always and artist. In fact, he was a journeyman bookkeeper when he almost kicked the bucket from Crohn's Disease. When Markus woke up in the hospital, he told everyone he knew the bookkeeper was dead after all, but in his place was a man who was going to become a successful artist. They thought he was nuts.
Two years later in June 1986, Markus started the Coyote Series. Pierson was living in Jackson, Michigan, a town perennially voted the worst place to live in America. Pierson's inspiration was a Joni Mitchell song, "Coyote." A friend of Markus put it on a tape and he listened. At the time, Pierson was 26, a dirt poor billboard painter living in a tiny one room apartment. He was so poor, in fact, Markus couldn't even afford a shower curtain to serve as a wedding present for two good friends who were getting married in the Southwest. Pierson figured they might like one of his Coyote drawings so he did a romantic one and took it there, the people at the wedding went nuts! Well, you know how these things go, somebody knew somebody who knew somebody in the art business, and within a year Pierson's art was being sold in over a hundred art galleries across the country.
Markus Pierson's Art History Collection provides a luminous and whimsical perspective on some of art history's most renowned painters, printmakers and sculptors. Pierson examines those who have made a fundamental contribution to the advancement of art, and exposes those who may have just been "at the right place at the right time." With enlightened, in-depth observations, Pierson's portraits and accompanying essays breathe new life into familiar imagery that will forever change the way you view these legendary icons.
